A new home for Brushie

A desperate brush-tailed possum has taken up residence in an unfortunate position over the footpath next to our house. I've been concerned about its welfare for some time, and after seeing a large area of its body poking through a widening gap in the foliage, I thought it was time to make a drey.

I had one unused wire plant basket and a length of chicken wire, which I doubled over and secured to the basket with zip ties, allowing for a front and back entrance/exit. I padded the inside and outside with coir, vines, grass, sticks and leaves, adding a found tuft of possum hair as a homely touch. Possum's new home was hung on a secure branch along the fence line, just a couple of metres away from its derelict house.

Now the waiting game begins.

By the end of the day, I checked on brushie again and he was awake, sitting higher in the same tree.

Come dusk, Brushie will pass by the drey while out on its customary wander. I hope s/he finds the drey suitable to its tastes.
